Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? (Who Took My Malay Away?) by Faizal Abdullah, Creative Producer
A lecture-performance that was inspired by the creator's early experiences of living in London, and made with the knowledge of life as a Malay person who was born, raised and educated in Singapore. This solo performance explores what it means to be Malay and what it then means to be Malay in Singapore. What begins simply as an attempt to reconnect with his culture - by sharing the disappearing traditional writing and reading system of the Malay Language, Jawi - then becomes a deeper exploration of lost culture, customs, heritage and self.
Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? had its first scratch in 2019 at Barrel Organ’s LIVE 10 at Camden People’s Theatre & a work in progress showing at the Homegrown Festival: Occupy at Battersea Arts Centre. It was later being supported as part of Park Theatre’s Prism Project. After a long hiatus, due to COVID-19, the piece was revisited for Migration Matters Festival ’22 in Sheffield.
